The ‘status quo’ at the beginning of your story is how things are BEFORE all the changes and excitement of the story happen. Hopefully your main character’s (MC’s) life will have changed substantially by the end of the story. It is good to know what the MC’s life is like before the story happens so that we can see how much it has changed.
